REFLECTIONS THE JAMJARY GENERAL MiiETIliiG It was SRO on January 26th when 63 members packed the house, indicating a great aeal of interest in speaker Charles Baldwin and his topic, "The CPR Princess Ships, BC Coastal Serviceâ€. "Charlie†as he prefers, a pioneer resident, is no stranger to the lectern. Re is well known for his eloquent speeches and ready wit - and for his tireless volunteer work over the years. Guest speaker Charlie was introduced by Frank Whiffin, who immediately switched hats to assist at the overhead projector. With stories and photos of the CPR Princesses, Charlie treated us to a "memory tripâ€. Through his anecdotes we travelled through time from the Princess May - first ship purchased after the CPR took over the CP Navigation Company in 1903 - right up to 1975 when the BC Steamships was formed and purchased the newly overhauled Princess Marguerite; a move which effectively closed the book on the CPR inter-city operations. Continuing his reminiscences, Charlie went on to share with us the poignant, personal story of his mother's illness while aboard the inbound Princess Kathleen and how, despite the valiant efforts of the captain and crew, she passed away. No more appreciative audience could be found than West Vancouverites who, over the years, had watched the daily comings and goings of the Princesses as they passed the shoreline. Events and activities were actually timed by the sight or 'hoot' of a Princess .... Alice, May, Joan, Kathleen, Marguerite, Elaine ............ Thank you Charlie, for a memorable and memory-packed evening,' a- -X- -> -H: OMNI UH-GATHERUM-»t- a miscellaneous collection (f, Latin omnium meaning "all of" and gatherum meaning "a gathering", pseudo-Latin, derivative of gather). The Editor hopes to make Onnium-Gatherum an on going department of the newsletter in order to provide a means by which members can express their ideas, ask questions, submit suggestions and voice opinions, A lot of interest was shown in the 'candy piece' that appeared in the January newsletter. Noma Hamilton adaed 'marrow bones' to the list - "toffee with white inside" and recalls that the ever-popular teddy bears had a cinnamon flavour and that jogged another recollection - the special seasonal sweets like the chalky pastel hearts at Valentines imprinted with messages of enduring love. Noma also supplied additional penny candy sources - Kerr's Drugstore and Noman's Grocery ana Mrs. Wright's Lions Gate Confectionery. â- n- -> a- -X- -X- -X- Sally Mitchell, one of our member-volunteers, sent along the first newsletter of the recently formed Whistler Museum and Archives Society.
