cr?^^ise: mxssi\/ee Dateline: July 5? 1987 The good news isj ue were a sell-out. As expected? there was a last minute scramble for "Memory Cruise" tickets but u.:hen it came right down to the crunch, all on the waiting list were accommodated - thanks to those thoughtful ticket holders who, unable to attend, turned in their tickets so that others could go. The bad news is, WE GOT WET! Last year, on this date, the precipitation was zip, zero, zilch. This year, 23.S mm of rain dumped on us. Migosh! Did it only seem like it all fell between one and four o’clock? Up to the "Glorious Fourth", the rainfall had been an itsy-bitsy, almost unmeasurable 1.8 ....... but on Sunday, we got it in spades. Undaunted, the "sail" was on. We can always count on Rupert Harrison to give an interesting and informative travelogue and he didn’t disappoint. Despite the inclement weather, many haiâ€" dy souls braved the upper deck for a panoramic view of Vancouver’s harbour and West Van’s shoreline; others socialized inside where a variery of picnic baskets unfolded while at the prow end, the bar did a brisk business. Pioneer residents Simon Baker, George Smith, Nettie Eorthwick, Jim Baker and Frank Colpitts were welcomed over the public address system by His Worship Mayor Don Lanskail as were honoured guests Mary Collins M.P., Jack Davis, M.L.A., Alderman Pat Eoname and Chairman of the 75th Anniversary Committee, Mr. Jim McCarthy. Recovering President, Eernie Holt, ubiquitous camera clutched in hand, dodged raindrops to get that "perfect shot". Fred Corbett of Washington State, along for the ride with sisters Florrie Mitchell and Dorothy Gentleman, ended up Joining our membership roster as did Erynice Agnew of Erynice Agnew Management Consultant Services Ltd. "Welcome Aboard!" 30th Corporate Member. A great deal of credit must go to Hugh Johnston for initiating the cruise and handling almost every problem and emergency (and there were more than a few) that arose from the time of inception right up to the morning of the 5th when "good weather sailors" were on the blower to see if the cruise had been cancelled. A doff of the hat to you, Hugh. We are indebted to George Smith and Rupert Harrison who were tireless in their researching and contacting 1912 pioneers. Arranged by Bas Collins and through the courtesy of the Wes" Vancouver Police Department, Andy Mandel covered the cruise with a video camera. After editing of the film, a copy will be made available to the Society and it will be shown at a future General Meeting. Also helping out were David Wilson who chur'ned out appropriate name tags on his home computer and Marjorie Murray who the made spiffy ribbons to go with them. Marjorie also took on the enormous task of single handedly telephoning every ticket holder when, for reasons of safety, the scheduled departure of the "Holly-burn" from Dundarave Pier was switched to Coal Harbour. Frank and Margaret Whiffin lugged boxes of Bruce Ramsey’s bool:; on board anc Mary Chapman (bless her) sold a good many of them. Georgie Wilson handled ticxst sales and surmounted cancellations and exchanges to balance receipts against tickets. A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to Harbou^ Ferries Ltd. Through them, we made an excellent profit, had a wonderful outing - and yes, some day we will do it again. Anybody out there know anything about weather forecasting"’
