THE FIRST MAY DAYS -1930 -41 INTRODUCTION There are very few long term residents of West Vancouver who do not look back with fondness on the yearly celebration of May Day with its queens, its parades, its May Pole dancing, its races, and in the evening, the dances for' young and old. It was, for 43 years, an event of total community involvement, something to be looked forward to with pleasure, and to be looked back upon with nostalgia. This essay is intended not just to recapitulate the growth of May Day in West Vancouver and to tell the story of how it started and grew, but to encourage all those who were involved to add to this account with stories, pictures, newspaper clippings of what went on each year. Many have already done so as witness the list of "credits" elsewhere in this issue. But the story is not yet complete and only the contributions of participants can make it so. . The Society would ask you to read and respond.
