After bringing Car-son to its present envied standing, he climaxed his career as director of instruction in North Van School District, finally retiring in 1976. Along the way, to mark his contributions to Indian education, he was made an honorary chief of the Squamish Band in 1969. Four years later his overall educational achievements brought him the Ferguson Memorial Award from the B.C. Teachers Federation. And this May, along with six of his peers, he’ll receive-a further accolade--an honorary degree from UBC. The names of the six peers are probably the best measure of what B.C. thinks of Jimmy Inkster. Sharing the honors with him will be Pierre Berton, architect Arthur Erickson, the IWA’s Jack Munro, former Sun publisher Stuart Keate, computer math genius Prof. Robert Langlands and legendary Indian anthropologist Margaret Siwallace of the Bella Coola Tribe.
