WEST VANCOUVER COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL As you know, for reasons of enlightened self interest, the Historical Society asked for and received affiliation with the West Vancouver Community Arts Council. On Tuesday, your president went along to Klee Wyk to attend a general meeting of the Council. It was a marathon session, starting at 7:30 P.M. and not ending until 11:15 P.M. Michael Evans, Council President was to complain during the evening that, with only 14 directors, there were not enough bodies to do the work of the Council. (Somewhere in this news letter, you will read the same complaint from your president who would like to see his three directors become six.) The activities with which the Council has a direct involvement certainly bore out the need for more help. These are the more important activities: 1. A mixed-media sculpture show to be held in September in the gardens at Klee Wyk. There will be a marque to house demonstrations and working exhibitions. The big problem is how to cover the cost (as Klee Wyk is designated a park, admissions can not be charged.) 2. A Car Raffle, the Council's big money-raising project, may solve its money problems for the year. The car is the latest model Mercedes-Benz. The tickets are $25 each, but only 3500 will be sold, which makes the odds much better than the 6/49. The Council hopes to raise at least $25,000. The Council expects to have a booth in one of the Park Royal Malls and is asking all the affiliates if they can help - if you are willing to help, phone 922-8264 and your name will be passed on. And if you would like to buy a ticket, ask at the next meeting, or phone. 3. An Arts Ball is to be a feature of Community Day, sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Commission (Mrs. Boname) with the co-operation of the Council. The date is Saturday 2 June. If you dance it should be fun. 4. A fashion show, featuring hand made garments made of hand painted fabrics will be staged at Klee Wyk on 31 March. 5. There is still one concert in the series - Instrumental ensembles on 24 March in the West Vancouver United Church. Council is able to get world class talent for its concert series because the concert is tied in with T.V., the concerts being taped for later presentation. The music lovers were raving about thecalibre of talent. 6. Showcase 1984 is a new project, intended to encourage a continuing interest in the arts at the high schoold level. The idea is to make up a program using the talents of individual students from the three secondary schools. If the student councils are interested enough to help with the staging, the project will go ahead. There may even be tied in a display of student art in the foyer. 7. Ambleside by the Sea is another project. A committee is working on recommendations for the development of the Ambleside waterfront if ever the housing and commercial development is removed. The same committee is considering plans for an improved entry to West Van. 8. A main job of members. The Council is publicity for the activities of the affiliate Historical Society has already benefitted a little.
