The Executive is reasonably happy with its efforts to make residents and visitors aware of the history and uniqueness of West Vancouver. There were six general meetings to which the public was invited. Five issues of this newsletter were published, but only members of the Society received them. A booth at Community Day drew attention, especially the display panel on Millard's Cannery. The Society must thank Mrs. Mi lien for that as she produced the panel as part of a research study on the cannery. An effort to take local history into the schools was successful enough to be worth persuing. The Executive had hoped to sponsor memory walks or history walks through areas of the community but had to abandon plans when volunteers to conduct the walks could not be found. Nevertheless, the Executive is pleased with what it has accomplished, and with continued effort, and the support of the membership, it sees 1984 as the year in which the Society really comes into its own. MEMBERSHIP FEES Article 9 of the By-laws of the Society states that the dues of the Society shall be set or adjusted for the coming year by a vote at an annual general meeting. The Executive has voted to recommend that there be no change in the present dues structure, but a change in the affiliation fee to the British Columbia Historical Federation will have an impact on members. Last year, the affiliation fee to the Federation was $3.00 per household and for that fee, each member of an affiliated society received four issues of the B.C. HISTORICAL NEWS. This year, the affiliation fee to the Federation is $1.00 per member and does not include a subscription to the NEWS. However, the magazine will be made available to affiliate members for $4.00 a year. The news stand price of the magazine is $3.00 a copy. How does this affect the Society? With 94 members living in 79 households, The Society paid an affiliation fee of $237. This year it will pay an affiliation fee of $94. If all 79 households wanted a subscription to the magazine at Society expense, the cost to the Society would be an extra $316 for a total of $410. The Executive does not feel the Society can afford this. The Executive proposes therefore that dues for the Society remain the same, and that those members who want to receive the BRITISH COLUMBIA HISTORICAL NEWS pay an extra $4.00 for the magazine. We would appreciate your response to this proposal.
