All in all the cruise was a most pleasurable and enjoyable experience. Only Mr. Johnstone and his helpers could see the black cloud that hovered over the enterprise - it was not a financial success. There is no way to avoid the expenses of the cruise. To rent the Holly-burn for three hours costs $1155; to hire the buses for the two trips costs $200. The limited advertising done cost $60. The silver collection paid for the refreshments. With only 113 tickets sold, the Society lost $300. At a meeting on Monday 20 June 1983, the Executive looked for reasons why so successful a venture could have lost money. Members came up with the following: 1. The cruise was not properly advertised. This can be corrected. 2. The cruise appeals only to a limited market of long time residents. Executive members are not sure that they accept this. 3. Selling tickets in the Senior Activity Centre discouraged purchases by younger people. Perhaps. 4. Tying the Cruise to Community Day reduced attendance as many interested people were involved as workers and could not get away. 5. Following the same route for a third time may cost us some customers who had been on the previous cruises. The Executive would like some imput from the general membership to the following suggestions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Drop the cruise altogether as an idea that has been milked dry. Have a cruise along the West Vancouver shoreline but only every second or third year. Have no cruise in 1984. Have a cruise in 1984, but follow the shoreline from Lions Gate Bridge to Wigwam Inn. After all, West Vancouver was part of North Vancouver from 1891 to 1912. Have a cruise in 1984 but have it the Saturday or Sunday before or after Community Day. Advertise it well and try to appeal to all the people in West Vancouver. Do get in touch with any member of the Executive and give him or her your views about the cruise. The Executive is more than willing to carry on if there is an assurance that many of you would like to see a cruise, in some form, continued. The Executive would like to express its thanks to Mrs. Sybil Mahon, who took over the job of selling tickets from a booth in the Senior Activity Centre When other promised outlets suddenly were unavailable. She did a fine job for you and for the Society.
