7. Five general meetings with guest speakers at each. IT COULDN'T HAPPEN IN WEST VAN. - COULD IT? Sometimes laws get passed that, while well intentioned, are so worded as to be unworkable if not down right ridiculous. During the summer vacation period, an American school superintendent chanced on such a law that tempted him to do a bit of checking and then to write the following memo to one of his secondary school principals: Mr. Duddle: A routine check of school records has disclosed that you failed to complete Kindergarten. V7e must, therefore, call your attention to Municipal Regulation 55-2938.11: "Kindergarten must be completed by every resident of this community. This mandatory requirement cannot be waived under any circumstances." Your lack of Kindergarten certification causes us to hereby order you to report for Kindergarten registration on the first Monday before the new term begins. In view of your advanced age, however, it will not be necessary for you to bring your mommy. WHERE IS THE SOCIETY GOING? At the A.G.M., a member expressed concern at what he perceived as an undue emphasis on collecting and on business. He was not interested in that. What he wanted was a social evening at which he could chat about the old days in West Vancouver. Actually, as the Executive sees it, both aspects are equally important to the Society. The business of collecting is the raison d’etre of the Society. It has a commitment to build up, maintain and make available to the public a historical record of West Vancouver and its people. But to do that, it must maintain a contact with the long time residents from whom much of the memories of the early days must come. By giving you general meetings, history walks, memory cruises, it hopes to get from you your memories, your photos, your artifacts. The fraternity and the collecting are two sides of the same coin. Enjoy the "mixing and memory" aspects and support, for the sake of generations to come, the collecting.
